Master Kanryo Higaonna: Founder of Naha-Te (1853-1915)

Kanryo Higaonna, born on March 10, 1853, in Naha, Okinawa's capital, was destined for greatness in the martial arts world. His father, a merchant and sailor, often traveled between Okinawa's islands to trade goods, and young Kanryo assisted him, building a robust physique through the demanding work.

Tragedy struck in Kanryo's teenage years when his father passed away unexpectedly. Driven by a desire to master martial arts, Kanryo journeyed to Fuzhou, China, in 1869 at the age of 16. There, he studied under the legendary Master Ryu Ryu Ko, becoming a dedicated private disciple. For 13 intense years, Kanryo honed his skills in Chinese martial arts, weapon techniques, and herbal medicine, earning high praise from his master. His exceptional abilities soon gained widespread recognition in Fuzhou and beyond.

Chojun Miyagi, the founder of Goju-Ryu and Kanryo Higaonna's successor, described Kanryo's strength and skill as superhuman. Miyagi noted, "Kanryo Sensei’s speed and power were truly superhuman; his hands and feet moved faster than lightning." Such praise highlights the extraordinary abilities of Kanryo Higaonna.

In 1881, after years of rigorous training, Kanryo returned to Naha, Okinawa, where he introduced his martial arts, known as Naha-te, also referred to as "Tode" (Chinese martial arts). He taught Naha-te to the people of Okinawa while continuing his own practice and research. To educate the youth, he developed a teaching method aimed at enhancing both physical and spiritual well-being.

October 1905 marked a significant moment when Kanryo began teaching Naha-te at the Naha Commercial High School, making the previously secretive art accessible to the public. Despite being a demanding instructor, Kanryo Higaonna was known for his humble and virtuous character. He lived a simple life, fully dedicated to martial arts. Stories of his training and life abound, particularly his legendary leg strength, which earned him the nickname "Ashi no Higaonna" (Legs Higaonna) in Okinawa. His popularity and virtuous nature led the people of Naha to honor him with the name "Obushi Higaonna" and “Tanmei,” reflecting their affection and respect for this supreme martial artist.

Kanryo Higaonna's unparalleled skill in martial arts aside, his great and distinguished work was in bringing Chinese martial arts to Okinawa and spreading these arts among the Okinawan people. He is now bestowed with the title “Kensei (sacred fists) Higaonna Kanryo,” a title which is eminently fitting. His name is synonymous with Okinawan martial arts and Naha-te, and his spirit is destined to live on forever as a great and valued treasure within Okinawan culture. Kanryo Higaonna’s whole life was devoted to karate. He passed away in December 1915 at the age of 63.
